What is Waste Categories (EXPLORATION / CREATIVE / QUERY / AUCTION_BID)?

ClickCatalyst classifies every dollar of detected Google Ads waste into one of four structural categories — EXPLORATION, CREATIVE, QUERY, or AUCTION_BID — so the dominant category names the lever to pull first.

Why it matters

Knowing you waste $1,000/month is a complaint; knowing $700 of it is QUERY waste is a fix. Different waste types have different remedies, and treating exploration spend like query waste (or vice versa) makes accounts worse.

How ClickCatalyst detects it

EXPLORATION is algorithmic learning spend and campaign over-learning — the fix is pacing and structure, not keyword pruning. CREATIVE is weak RSA combinations and low-performing assets — the fix is ad copy and asset variety. QUERY is search-term intent mismatch — the fix is negative keywords. AUCTION_BID is overpaying at auction — the fix is bid strategy and Quality Score work.

Every entity in the account is pre-classified by the intelligence pipeline; the audit groups categories and sums wasted spend and recovery potential per category, ordered by total waste.

The exact formula
Per category:
  total_waste        = SUM(wasted_spend)
  recovery_potential = SUM(recovery_potential)
  entity_count       = COUNT(DISTINCT entity_id)

Example

In one audited account, 84.3% of all waste traced to algorithmic exploration cycles rather than traffic quality — meaning negative keywords would have fixed almost nothing.
