What is Shopping Waste?

Shopping Waste is the portion of a Shopping budget consumed by catalog segments that structurally cannot pay it back — zombie SKUs, thin-margin categories, and products crippled by incomplete feed data.

Why it matters

Shopping ROAS is a catalog average, and averages hide losers. An account can report a healthy blended ROAS while a third of its SKUs burn budget with zero sales and its revenue depends dangerously on a handful of winners.

How ClickCatalyst detects it

The catalog is split into performance tiers — winners, zombies, and unknowns — and revenue concentration is measured to show whether Shopping revenue depends on a handful of SKUs.

Feed health analysis checks for missing product attributes (brand, category, identifiers) that prevent the algorithm from matching products to the right queries, and account CPC/CTR are compared against Google Shopping benchmark data from Google's own API.

The output is a priority-ranked exclusion list: the exact SKUs to remove from Shopping campaigns, ordered by wasted spend, plus category-level ROAS comparison showing which product categories earn their budget.

Example

A catalog where 5% of SKUs drive 80% of revenue while 200 zombie SKUs each burn a few dollars a day is reporting "fine" blended ROAS and still leaking hundreds per month.
